10/25/12: I remember hearing about “Watson
and Crick” in my high school biology class when we discussed about the DNA molecule structure. My Biology professor at Lone Star College mentioned a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for people who lives in Houston: “James Watson is coming to Houston.” My
mouth dropped right there in the room because this whole time, I thought that James Watson was dead.
This symposium was the first symposium I have ever went to. This was also my first time "catching a ride" from classmates that I do not talk to. Being able to come to the symposium to hear full-out professionals talk about what they have been working on is something I will not take for granted.
P.S. This was also the first day I missed any of my college classes for anything... and the class I missed was my History class and the discussion about the past medicine practices...

A Story from James Watson: The one thing that I will never be able to get over is how history always involve "the unexpected." People never really thought something would happen until it happens. James Watson told us the story of how he finished college and began working in the field of many sciences. When he was unsure of what to do, his friend (either Francis Crick or Maurice Wilkins) asked him to join the research of the human DNA. Dr. Watson initially did not want to work on the project because this project at that time was a project that no scientist would work on unless they absolutely have nothing else to do. In the end, the discovery of the DNA structure initiated many projects, including the "Human Genome Project."
The Other "Doctors":
Dr. Hood, the president and co-founder of the Institute for Systems Biology, is one of the world's leading scientists in molecular biotechnology and genomics. Dr. John Mendelsohn, a retired president of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, is an internationally recognized leader in cancer research. Dr. Nancy Chang is a recognized entrepreneur who co-founded Tanox as a biotech company that focuses on the treatments for asthma, allergy other diseases that affect the human immune system.
At the end of the symposium...
When I saw people getting his autograph throughout the day, I decided that I wanted to get some kind of memorabilia or memento to remember the day that I got to see James Watson in person. I forgot to bring my notebook and I did not have any of James Watson's books, so I thought "a flashcard would do." When I went up to him to ask for a signature (while my sister recorded the event), he said "no." HAHAHA... yea...
Let's say it like this: I will always remember the day I got to stand by James Watson... And when he said no to me... Yes, I was very, very disappointed... and embarrased... oh well.
